Collection: Hibiscus Heroes

Hibiscus Heroes is a small studio based in Auroville, where clothing is shaped by nature, patience, and handwork rather than speed or replication. Each piece is created slowly using eco-printing, plant-based dyes, and traditional hand printing techniques that allow fabric to carry the marks of how it was made.

This collection centers on eco-printed shirts, naturally dyed garments, and a small number of hand block printed indigo pieces designed for warm climates, relaxed movement, and everyday wear.

At the heart of the Hibiscus Heroes collection are eco-printed shirts made using foraged leaves, plant matter, and natural mordants. Rather than applying repeat patterns, leaves are placed directly onto fabric and steamed or pressed by hand, allowing natural shapes and tones to emerge through contact. Colors come from sources such as madder root, myrobalan, iron water, and botanical matter gathered locally. Because the process relies on nature rather than formulas, no two garments are ever exactly alike.

Alongside eco-printing, the collection includes a small number of indigo shirts created using the Dabu resist technique. This traditional method involves applying a hand-prepared resist paste to fabric before dyeing it in natural indigo, creating calm, rhythmic patterns shaped by hand.

Both eco-printed and Dabu-printed pieces share the same values: slow production, breathable natural fabrics, and environmentally friendly processes without chemical shortcuts.

Hibiscus Heroes garments are designed for people who value natural variation, quiet craft, and clothing that carries a sense of place. Each piece reflects the rhythm of handwork and the influence of living materials.

For complementary craft-led pieces, you can also explore our LAL Design Studio Collection, which focuses on hand block printed organic cotton garments.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hibiscus Heroes

How are Hibiscus Heroes garments printed?

Hibiscus Heroes garments are eco printed or hand block printed using traditional techniques. For eco printed shirts, locally foraged leaves and natural materials are placed directly onto the fabric. Other pieces are printed by hand using carved wooden blocks. Each method is slow, intentional, and done entirely by hand.

What dyes are used in these pieces?

Colors are created using natural and low impact dye processes, including plant based sources such as indigo and madder root. Some garments use resist techniques like Dabu printing. All methods prioritize environmental care and avoid harsh chemical finishes.

Will every piece look exactly the same?

No. Because each garment is eco printed or hand block printed by hand, variations in color, pattern placement, and intensity are natural. These differences are a defining feature of artisan made clothing and ensure every piece is one of a kind.

How should I wash and care for these garments?

We recommend gentle hand washing in cold water with mild detergent. Wash separately for the first few washes and dry in shade. Naturally dyed and eco printed fabrics soften and settle beautifully with careful wear and washing.

Where are Hibiscus Heroes garments made?

These garments are made in small batches in Auroville, India by skilled artisans working with natural fabrics and traditional printing methods. Production focuses on craft, process, and respect for materials rather than speed or volume.

Are these garments suitable for warm climates?

Yes. The collection uses lightweight, breathable natural fabrics designed for comfort in warm and humid climates. Hibiscus Heroes garments are well suited to everyday wear in places like Goa.
